Cleanup Story
Quick Curbside Cleanup on Veteran Avenue in Los Angeles
Along Veteran Avenue in Los Angeles, one volunteer stopped for a quick curbside cleanup where lightweight food packaging had collected against the gutter and concrete edge. The before photo shows broken white foam pieces, small paper scraps, a wrapper, and a disposable cup or container mixed in with dry leaves and street debris.
After just 2 minutes, the larger pieces of litter were gone, leaving the curbside area much clearer. It was a small cleanup, but the difference is easy to see: less trash along the road, fewer loose pieces ready to blow into the street, and a cleaner neighborhood for people passing by.
Foam food packaging is especially important to remove because it breaks apart into smaller and smaller fragments. Once those pieces scatter, they are much harder to collect and can move with wind or rain toward storm drains. In Los Angeles, curbside litter can eventually connect to local waterways and the ocean.
This kind of volunteer effort shows how even a tiny stop can help. One small spot at a time, community cleanups keep everyday litter from becoming a bigger problem.
