Volunteer Clears Cardboard and Paper Waste from Veteran Avenue — before and after comparison

A repeat stop on Veteran Avenue in Los Angeles got a quick but noticeable cleanup on a dry July evening. One volunteer spent 30 minutes tidying a street-level spot in front of an apartment building, where the before photo shows a flattened piece of cardboard and a crumpled piece of paper on the roadway.

By the after photo, those larger loose items were gone, leaving the pavement visibly clearer. It is a simple improvement, but these are exactly the kinds of pieces that can move around the block with traffic, wind, or the next wash of water along the curb.

Cardboard and paper may seem less harmful than plastic, but street litter still matters. Once it breaks apart, it can clog gutters, collect grime, and carry ink, fibers, and debris toward storm drains. In Los Angeles, keeping litter off the street helps reduce what eventually moves through the stormwater system toward local waterways and the ocean.

This kind of volunteer cleanup supports a cleaner neighborhood without needing a big event or a large crew. A small spot cared for today makes the whole community feel a little more looked after, one small spot at a time.
