Cleanup Story
Veteran Avenue Volunteer Clears Paper Litter from a Los Angeles Tree Well
On Veteran Avenue in Los Angeles, one volunteer spent 30 minutes giving attention to a small grassy parkway tree well near the curb. The before photo shows a crumpled piece of white paper or tissue sitting in the grass beside a young, staked street tree. In the after photo, that visible paper waste is gone, leaving the grass and tree well looking cleaner.
This was also a repeat spot from an earlier cleanup on the same day, which says something important about neighborhood care: even small areas can benefit from a second look. On a dry, mild July evening, a quick cleanup helped keep windblown litter from spreading farther down the block.
Paper waste may seem minor compared with plastic or bulky dumping, but in a tree well it can still make a public space feel neglected. Litter can collect around roots, mix with soil, and invite more trash if it is left in place. Keeping tree wells clear supports healthier urban greenery and a cleaner neighborhood.
Small cleanups like this are simple, visible acts of community stewardship in Los Angeles — one small spot at a time.
