Two-Minute Plastic Bag Cleanup at UCLA

A small UCLA cleanup in Westwood made a visible difference in just about two minutes. The before photo showed a clear plastic bag with a paper label sitting on a concrete step near a brick wall and handrail. In the after photo, that plastic waste is gone, leaving the walkway noticeably cleaner while the natural dry leaves remain.

Even lightweight plastic like this matters. Clear bags and packaging can blow from steps and sidewalks into gutters, where Los Angeles stormwater can carry litter toward local waterways and eventually the ocean. Plastic also breaks into smaller pieces over time instead of truly disappearing, making quick removals worthwhile even when the item looks minor.

This kind of volunteer action is a reminder that a cleaner neighborhood does not always require a long cleanup. Sometimes it is one piece of plastic, one campus corner, and one person deciding not to walk past it.

One small spot at a time, Los Angeles gets cleaner and more beautiful.
