Cleanup Story
Plastic Packaging Removed from a Westwood Planting Bed
At Gayley & Veteran in Los Angeles, one volunteer spent 30 minutes on a small but visible cleanup in a landscaped curbside planting bed. The before photo showed a piece of clear plastic packaging sitting on the soil between ornamental plants near the sidewalk. In the after photo, that plastic is gone, leaving the area looking calmer, cleaner, and better cared for.
Plastic film and packaging can be easy to overlook, but it does not simply disappear. Sun and foot traffic can break it into smaller pieces that are harder to remove and more likely to move with wind or rain toward gutters and storm drains. In a dry, warm Los Angeles landscape, removing plastic early helps keep planted areas from becoming long-term litter traps.
This was a simple volunteer action, but it made an immediate difference for the people walking by and for the plants growing there. A cleaner neighborhood often starts with noticing one small item and taking the time to remove it.
