Cleaning Up With Kids: A Family Guide

June 4, 2026

Some of our favorite volunteers are under four feet tall. Bringing kids to a community cleanup turns a chore into an adventure — and quietly teaches the best lesson a city kid can learn: this place belongs to you, and you belong to it.

Make it a game

Scavenger hunts work wonders: who can find something blue? Something that doesn’t belong in nature? Ten bottle caps? Kids compete to fill bags while parents handle anything sharp or questionable.

Right-size the job

A full two-hour cleanup is a lot for little legs. Thirty focused minutes on one small spot — a parkway strip, a bus stop, the corner by the school — is a perfect kid-sized victory.

Celebrate the after

Take the before photo together, take the after photo together, and let them see the difference they made. Ice cream after is not required, but it is traditional.

Family-friendly events are marked on our Events page — gloves come in small sizes too. Join us this weekend!
